how does credit card company set the minimum payment?
I am just wondering by what criteria the minimum payment was set up. Because I got two credit cards here and I think the minimum payment portion are quite different. And I also want to know what APR simply is (got headache to read such long policy statement) . If I pay the minimum every time, do I need to concern about APR? Thank you!
Every credit card company sets its own minimum payment requirement but. it always is a percentage of the outstanding balance. Every credit card that I have has a 2% minimum payment (but no less than $10) but it can be higher than that and it depends on your credit history, among other things. Unfortuantely, the only way to find out what yours is, is to take a look at your credit cards' contracts, even if it gives you a headache.
The APR represents the interest that you will pay on your unpaid balance for a year, as a percentage of the unpaid amount. So if your APR is 20% and you make the minimum payment of $10 on your $110 statement, on the remaining $100 you will pay $20 ($100x0.02) in interest over the next 12 months. So the short answer is yes, you do have to be concerned about the APR.
