How do I set up a sub, amp, battery, car deck?
Well I am making a portable speaker box with a 8"sub 700w, 200w amp, and a 160w car deck. I am wondering how i can power all of things. Can I use a car battery, the smallest of its kind? if there is too much power from the battery for the system how can i balance it out? Please help
From a battery...
A battery can't supply "too much power" as the system will only consume what's needed. The bigger the battery, the longer it will play, however, the battery will need to be recharged after a while.
In the car....
A second battery is only a band-aid. The best thing you can do is upgrade the alternator if needed.
For example, assuming what you state is RMS....
To calculate the current draw of an amplifier, find the total watts RMS of the amp. Double it to account for amplifier inefficiency (720 watts X 2 = 1440 watts), then divide by the average output Voltage of an alternator, 13.8 volts (1440 divided by 13.8 = 104 amps). Since the average music signal requires about 1/3rd of the average power in a test tone, divide by 3 (104 amps divided by 3 = 34.7 amps).
The result is the amplifier's approximate average current draw and can go higher depending on demand. So between 35 and 52 amps would be the answer for this example.
The alternator of a:
compact car is about 35 amps
mid-sized car is about 65-75 amps
SUV is about 145 amps
Calculate 40% of the amperes of the alternator you have now. This is the average current the car uses when running. Add this number to the approximate average current draw of the amps, and you will come up with the actual size of alternator you need.
If the number you come up with is the same as what your alternator supplies, you need to take no action.
