Machine Blowout
Car tyre pressure check machines, safe or not?
I've just used a tyre pressure checking machine while in a motorway service station, it cost .20p for 120 seconds that includes the time it took to set the desired pressure.
As I used the machine on each tyre I noticed that rather than inflating the tyres they were being deflated, the electronic gauge was set to psi rather than bar, so resetting the pressure scale to bar I tried again.
Before I could go to each tyre the money ran out so I put yet another coin in, but again I noticed something strange going on, in putting in another coin, the 'desired pressure' had been reset to a default value, far too low for my vehicle.
It took 2 more coins to get the tyre pressures correct, given that most people using these machines are going on a motorway and about to drive at high speeds for sustained periods how stupid is it to have a machine that could make a high speed tyre blowout more likely?
Tyre pressures should be checked when the tyre is COLD so your wasting your time using a petrol stations pump/gauge. Plus they are never accurate.
£5 for a pencil gauge and get a decent foot pump or electric pump from Halfauds/Argos and you never need to use a garage one again.
You SHOULD be checking tyre pressures and ALL fluids regular anyway and not just for motorways.
