Mahogany Finish
ADVICE on a what wood finish to use!?
I have successfully stripped and sanded down and large wood framed mirror. I am now looking forward to staining and finishing the wood a darker mahogany color. I am looking the wood PROS out there to give me helpful advice on what type of finish to use and proper application process...there are a bunch of options but what would be best for a rich look for a wall mirror??? THANK YOU!!
I would stain it with one or two coats of stain depending how dark you want it. Then apply three coats of polyurethane varnish. Zar makes the most user friendly stains I have found. Sherwin Williams Wood Classics are a close second. Apply it with a brush and wipe off any excess after about 10 minutes. Minwax stain is the worst I know of. Zar, Varithane and Zip Guard make excellent varnish. For this project you will probably want to use oil base varnish. Apply it with a white china bristle brush. Before the final coat sand lightly with 220 grit sandpaper. Use tack cloths before every coat. Allow overnight drying time between coats and don't skimp on brushes. If you buy a good paintbrush and take care of it you can use it for future projects. Read the labels on the cans and you shouldn't go wrong.
