Origins of the term and usage of "silver spoons"?

It's a saying that people who are born into wealthy or privileged families are born with a "silver spoon in their mouth". How did that term originate? Did people use to have silver spoons that they gave the children/babies? Was it a feeding spoon, a toy(chewing toy or rattle) or just a token of wealth? And are they still in use today(weather for their original use or just for show)?

I found a website in German (no English translation) from a different ask/answer site. According this answer it was common - especially in Great Britain starting in the 14th and 15th century- to give a new born a silver spoon usually by the god mother/father, the original name was "apostle spoon". There are different references why this was done:

- Jesus received gifts including a spoon (?)
- silver was considered a symbol of wealth and included the wish for an economical/financial well being for the child
- in former times everybody had a spoon, in peasant households it was common to eat from one pott and as there was not a lot of meat a spoon was the main tool, everyone had one and basically kept it for life
- silver was (and is still) considered to have anti-bacterial properties and it made sense to feed a baby with a silver spoon instead of a wooden spoon (which were common at that time) as this could attract a lot of bacteria

The author claims that this excerpt from Henry VIII from Shakespeare refers to this:

KING HENRY VIII

The meaning would be that Cranmer has a god child and tries to avoid to give him his presence , he "spare his spoon"
