I have heard that there is a floating landfill the size of Texas floating in the ocean. Is that true?
Where is it? What can be done to recycle this trash?
The amnount of Municipal Solid Waste generated in the US per year is around 130 Million tons. Assume the denity of the waste is about that of water. Texas has an area of 260,000 sq miles. If you spread one year worht of trash over the area of Texas, the depth is 0.007 inches, about the thickness of 2 sheets of paper. If you include all the waste ever generated by the US (the world's largest waste generator) for the history of the country, the depth is still much less than 1 inch. In short, such a floating island of waste cannot exist.
Even is it were only the size of Rhode Island (the smallest state), a full year of waste is 1.5 inches.
