Strike Red

What color of red to dye my hair?

I am a brunette and I am looking for change. I want to dye my hair red and was thinking of something striking - maybe fire red or would it just be better to go burgundy.. like a black cherry? or a will and Grace red? any thoughts, ideas?

that depends on your skin tone. first of all, red does fade ridiculously fast, so you'd probably need to buy a shampoo for red or color treated hair. for now, you should experiment with temporary hair dyes, like loreal color pulse. this way, you can try on a few different colors, see what you like, and if you don't like it, it should wash out fairly easily. if you want something more long lasting, then try a semi-permanent in a color you like. however, the semi permanent and temporary hair colors will NOT lighten your hair, they only deposit color on top of your natural color. if you really want to go permanent, i would suggest that you either dye it with a reddish brown or auburn color: it still looks great, but if you don't like it it will probably fade to something closer to brown than orange. also, sometimes with an auburn your hair looks brown, but then when you go out into sunlight, it looks a beautiful red color. if you use an auburn color and you decide that you'd like to go more red, you can. it doesn't work very easily the other way around because even if you dye over it with a brown or something, there will still be red tones.
